How do you take two buildings totaling 40,000 square feet of industrial space and convert it to an office showplace for the biggest company in the world? California Bay Area’s SC Builders teamed up with PolishedCrete and Bay Area Concretes (BAC) as they connected the two buildings in Sunnyvale and diamond polished the floors (see picture gallery) to refurbish and refinish into a beautiful decorative flooring.
This is an interesting project because the existing concrete slab had a nice color already so we didn’t add any coloring to the floor, notes Jonathan Vasquez, COO of PolishedCrete and BAC. That’s not to say it wasn’t tricky, we ended having to deal with some major trenching and plenty of patching. There were also areas where NVT (tiles) had been sitting for maybe 10 years so, needless to say, there was some great “character” we got to feature.
Bay Area Concretes used the Retroplate diamond polishing system for this project and PolishedCrete’s equipment. The floor was polished up to an 800 diamond grit level (the polishing process begins with a 50-grit diamond resin pad instead of a metal. When using the resin pads the steps may be 100, then 200, 400, and finally 800 grit). Throughout the process, BAC used a densifier to harden the concrete surface, which allows the concrete to generate/accept a polished finish. In addition to office space, the polished concrete floor will serve as the flooring for thousands of square feet of laboratory workspace.
